Spiraling and can't stop overthinking? Try the Spiral Interrupt

By Sydney Senior · Updated

When you're spiraling, you're replaying the same scenario over and over, each version worse than the last. It feels like problem-solving, but it's anxiety wearing a productive-looking outfit.

When you're spiraling, thinking harder usually won't help first. Shift your state, then return to the facts.

Signs you're in this pattern

Why it happens

Spiraling is your imagination building a detailed simulation of something that hasn't happened, and your body reacting as if it had. Your brain thinks it's preparing you. But you rarely come out of a spiral with a plan. You come out exhausted. And check the track record: how many of the worst cases you imagined this year actually happened?

Why "just think positive" doesn't work

A spiral isn't just a thought. It's a stress response in your body. You can't argue your way out of that state. You interrupt it first, then think.

Start here

1. Break the loop physically. A walk, jumping jacks, cold water on your face, leaving the room, calling someone. Your body has to interrupt the loop before your brain can think clearly.

2. Separate facts from fiction. Write down what you're afraid will happen. Then write what you actually know right now: provable facts only, no guessing.

What's in the full protocol

The Spiral Interrupt in the Field Guide adds running all three scenarios (worst, best, neutral), the worst-case survival check, what you can actually control, a prediction tracker, and your own operating rule.

Questions

How do I stop overthinking right now?

Change your physical state first: move, step outside, put the phone down. Then write down only what you know for sure.

What's the difference between spiraling and problem-solving?

Problem-solving moves toward a next step and you feel a little better. Spiraling goes in circles and you feel worse.

Is spiraling the same as anxiety?
